Building capability to deliver sustainability

Building capability to deliver sustainability

Organisations need to have sound skills to understand risks and opportunities from sustainability issues. We can build capability so that your organisation is resilient to the challenges of a changing world.

Typically projects we work on include:

  • Organisation specific sustainability courses

  • Developing skills in environmental specialists

  • Training environmental auditors (such as to support ISO14001)

  • Leadership workshops

  • IEMA accredited Training

  • E-learning design and content creation

IEMA Environmental Sustainability Skills for the Workplace is the 2018 update of IEMA’s All Jobs Greener Training Programme (previously titled Working with and Managing with Environmental Sustainability).  There are two versions:

  • IEMA Environmental Sustainability Skills - for the Workforce: for all employees.  It covers risks and opportunities from sustainability issues, making environmental improvements, ISO14001, key compliance requirements and background on significant issues such as climate change, carbon and pollution.
  • IEMA Environmental Sustainability Skills - for the Manager: this builds on the Workforce content but includes information and activities on communicating sustainability issues and different roles in an organisation, change management, resource efficiency (e.g. energy management), procurement/supply chain.  It is suitable for people in a managerial/supervisory role.

What would my organisation gain from these courses?

The courses are designed for non-specialists to learn about sustainability and environmental management concepts and how to apply them in the workplace. They can help an organisation to implement its sustainability programme, raising awareness and competence of staff and reduce environmental risks.

The courses are highly engaging, using a mixture of inspirational case-studies and focussed learning activities (including group work) to make for an enjoyable and valuable learning experience

How do they work?

These can be delivered either as public course (with dates shown below), or where there are a number of delegates - as an in-house course and are designed to be customisable to different sectors and organisations.  The courses can therefore become part of your internal training programme.

When are the public course dates?

    • IEMA Environmental Sustainability Skills - for the Workforce 1 day
      2018 dates: 06th June, 17th July, 25th September - London

    • IEMA Environmental Sustainability Skills - for the Manager 2 days - includes the Foundation Day
      2018 dates: 06th & 07th June, 17th & 18th July, 25th & 26th September - London

These courses can be tailored to your specific organisation (e.g. case-studies, policies, activities etc) and delivered globally - please contact us for further details.

As an environmentalist, I was very impressed by Peter’s thorough knowledge of environmental management issues, from carbon footprinting to environmental behaviour change to legal compliance.
As a fellow trainer, I highly enjoyed his very effective training methods, for instance most of the training Peter was asking questions rather than lecturing (which facilitates adult learning enormously).

    Environmental management systems and ISO14001

    Implemention and improvement

    Environmental management systems and ISO14001

    Implemention and improvement

An environmental management system (EMS) is a structured approach to controlling environmental risks, a framework for improvement and a means to communicate environmental responsibility to your customers and investors.

One thing is clear - ISO14001 can no longer be a box ticking exercise.

ISO14001 includes an enhanced role for management, ensuring environmental sustainability is reflected throughout the organisation and its influence and to use life-cycle thinking with regards to the external impacts of a product or service.

    • Environmental review for planning the EMS including determining baseline environmental impacts and developing a road-map for system implementation

    • Design and development of EMS structure, supporting documentation and auditing strategy

    • Design and update register of compliance requirements (legal register)

    • Training to support EMS implementation (senior management workshops, internal auditor training, environmental awareness, transitioning to ISO14001 2015)

    • Gap analysis for ISO14001 2015 for organisations with existing systems - and producing a strategy for how to move to the new standard

    • Integrated management systems - bringing together ISO14001 with ISO9001 and OHSAS 18001
