Arqiva – Science-Based Target Validation Support

Arqiva – Science-Based Target Validation Support

Arqiva partnered with Watts Sustainability to develop and validate science-based decarbonisation targets through the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is an internationally recognised non-profit that supports organisations in setting ambitious emission reduction targets that align with the most up-to-date climate science.

Client: Arqiva

Project: Science-Based Target Validation Support

Year: 2025

Who was the client?

Arqiva is a UK-based critical infrastructure company providing broadcast, media, and utility communications services, owning and operating much of the UK’s TV/radio transmission network, including for Freeview, and delivering connectivity for smart metering, working with major clients like the BBC, ITV, and utility companies.

They manage a vast network of masts, towers, and satellite teleports, facilitating digital radio, television, and mobile services, with a history dating back to early BBC broadcasts.

What did we do?

Arqiva approached Watts Sustainability to support them through the development and validation of their science-based decarbonisation targets through the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI).

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organisation that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis. They develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at latest.

The project involved:

  • Conducting a gap analysis of existing emissions data against the SBTi criteria to ensure Arqiva’s baseline emissions would be compliant.
  • Modelling annual emission reduction scenarios and agreeing realistic operational and value-chain targets for both near-term and long-term (net zero) goals for the business.
  • Submitting the targets to SBTI and liaising between Arqiva and SBTI technical teams throughout the validation process.

You can see Arqiva’s science-based targets on the SBTi’s Target Dashboard here:

How did we deliver value?

We took a collaborative approach with the client from the start, to ensure that Arqiva’s targets were relevant and realistic for the business to achieve.

We demystified the process and supported Arqiva to establish an emissions boundary and baseline which met SBTIs requirements.

As an expert technical partner, we supported Arqiva through the extensive validation process to get their targets approved.

What our clients say?

Collaborating with Watts Sustainability enabled us to navigate the SBTi validation process, effectively meaning our targets were validated within 2 months of submission to SBTi.
