Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity – ESG Materiality Assessment

The aim of the project was to undertake a review to determine which ESG (‘Environmental, Social, Governance’) topics are of most importance (most material) to both to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) Charity, and its principal stakeholders.

To help them with this, we carried out a bespoke materiality assessment for GOSH Charity, consulting with internal and external stakeholders to identify the issues most impactful to GOSH Charity and its value chain.

Client: Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity

Project: Materiality Assessment

Year: 2023-2024

Who was the client?

Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH Charity) is one of the largest UK-based registered charities, raising and distributing funds to support Great Ormond Street Hospital including funding patient, family and staff support, cutting-edge medical equipment, and the building and refurbishment of child-centred facilities.

GOSH Charity is also the UK’s largest dedicated charitable funder of child health research.

What did we do?

Watts Sustainability designed and carried out a bespoke materiality assessment for GOSH Charity.  This enabled the charity to understand the most important and relevant environmental, social and governance issues and use this information to inform its strategy and core activities.

We translated a complex and fast-moving ESG landscape into a clear set of material priorities, grounded in the views of supporters alongside trustees, senior leaders, fundraisers and staff. This ensured the charity’s ESG focus reflects both its charitable objects and the expectations of those who fund and support its work.

The process included an initial shortlisting of ESG topics through peer and context review, a series of consultation workshops, a supporter survey and an impact assessment.

We also provided a roadmap on how to take the project outputs forward into a sustainability strategy, including suggestions on themes, indicators and objectives.

How did we deliver value?

Watts Sustainability delivered a robust, evidence-led ESG materiality review that gave GOSH Charity a clear, defensible foundation for strategic decision-making on sustainability and ESG priorities.

By presenting a clear materiality matrix and practical recommendations, the project equipped senior leadership and trustees with a shared evidence base to agree priorities, manage risk, and make confident decisions about where to focus time, funding and resources.

What our clients say?

ESG and sustainability are very important for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, so to strategically plan our approach, we engaged Watts Sustainability to help us carry out this initial materiality exercise. We have developed an effective and trusting relationship and continue to partner on making progress in this vital area.
