Institute of Cancer Research – ISEP ‘Sustainability at the ICR’ Training

The ICR have made significant progress on sustainability – and key to driving change across the institute has been the role of training.

Watts Sustainability and the ICR developed an accredited but bespoke Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) accredited training ‘Sustainability at the ICR’ to support roles including researchers, technical staff, estates professionals and others to understand and collaborate better on sustainability goals.

Client: ICR

Project: Training

Year: 2025

Who was the client?

The Institute of Cancer Research (‘ICR’) is one of the world’s leading cancer research institutes, conducting cutting-edge research to understand cancer biology and develop new treatments. It also trains scientists and works closely with hospitals to translate discoveries into innovative therapies for patients.

What did we do?

Watts Sustainability designed and delivered a new ISEP bespoke training course for the ICR: ‘Sustainability at the ICR’. We designed this course to help the ICR’s teams understand sustainability issues at the ICR, what they mean for their various roles, and how they can contribute to the ICR’s sustainability strategy.

As this course was tailored based on the content of two ISEP courses – Env Sustainability Skills for the Workforce (ESSW) and Env Sustainability Skills for the Manager (ESSM), taking a modular approach depending on the depth of learning required.

The objectives of the course were to provide a strategic and operational overview of sustainability, provide specific insight into some of the ICR’s key sustainability issues, and provide practical guidance to help colleagues incorporate sustainability into their day-to-day work.

Participants would learn about laboratory and biomedical science related sustainability concepts specific to the ICR as well as understanding building and estates-based issues and gaining a recognised qualification from ISEP.

How did we deliver value?

For the ICR to achieve its sustainability objectives, it’s vital that they foster a culture of sustainability – where its teams champion a way of working which is better for people and the planet. This course ensured that everyone at the ICR is aware of its strategy and goals, and the part they can play in achieving them, and demonstrated why it’s so important to do so.

What our clients say?

I found this course very thought provoking and it was extremely interesting to hear about the projects the ICR have or are undertaking to help the organisation become more sustainable
