Ocean Outdoor – Carbon Footprinting and Science-Based Target Validation

Ocean Outdoor – Carbon Footprinting and Science-Based Target Validation

Ocean Outdoor and Watts Sustainability have been collaborating on Ocean Outdoor’s annual organisational carbon footprint since 2020. We have been using this work to track Ocean’s year-on-year decarbonisation progress. In 2025, we worked to validate Ocean Outdoor’s decarbonisation targets with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

As of March 2026, we are thrilled to share that Ocean Outdoor and Watts Sustainability were shortlisted for the BusinessGreen Net Zero Strategy of the Year Award.

Client: Ocean Outdoor

Project/Service: Carbon Footprinting and SBTi Support

Pillar: Climate Action and Net Zero

Year: 2020 – 2026

Who was the client?

Ocean Outdoor specialise in large-format, premium Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) advertising, transforming iconic spaces like Piccadilly Circus into engaging canvases. They manage prime digital billboard and banner locations across the UK, Netherlands, Nordics, and Germany

What did we do?

Watts Sustainability has been supporting Ocean Outdoor with their sustainability goals since 2020. This has included completing their annual organisational carbon footprint, in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.

  • We established Ocean Outdoor’s first organisational carbon footprint and greenhouse gas inventory in 2020, including Scopes 1, 2, and 3, in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard
  • Since then, we’ve worked together to update Ocean Outdoor’s carbon footprint every year, including embodied carbon calculation for Ocean Outdoor’s most-commonly purchased screens
  • We developed decarbonisation targets aligned with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) methodology, and tracked Ocean Outdoor’s progress in achieving them

In 2025, Ocean Outdoor sought to have their decarbonisation targets validated, and make public their commitment to achieving net zero. Again, they have reached out to Watts Sustainability for support with this:

  • We supported Ocean Outdoor during the rigorous SBTi process, liasing with the SBTi’s assessors and with stakeholders across Ocean Outdoor’s international business
  • We demystified the process for Ocean Outdoor, helped answer technical questions

How did we deliver value?

Creating a credible carbon baseline aligned with international standards providing a trusted foundation for action and disclosure.  Updating measurement annually demonstrates decarbonisation progress. It shows external stakeholders that an organisation is taking its commitment to sustainability seriously. Ocean Outdoor’s sustainability work differentiates them from their peers in the digital out-of-home advertising space, and their decarbonisation targets gaining validation from the SBTi give their progress credibility.

We have been Ocean Outdoor’s trusted partner for sustainability support since 2020. Throughout this time, we’ve come to understand their business deeply, so can give recommendations and support that are tailored to the unique needs of Ocean Outdoor’s operations and clientele.
