Cows, Climate and Compassion: A Visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor

The team recently had the pleasure of spending a day at Bhaktivedanta Manor near Watford, hosted by the wonderful Achyuta Mir-Masoumi. The manor is a farm and Hare Krishna spiritual centre where cows are respected, not exploited.

This visit followed on from our work with the Seeds of Change project, in which we delivered climate action and environmental auditing education to an interfaith group called Faiths Forum for London. Achyuta, our fantastic tour guide, was one of many faith group leaders who attended the training. In his day job, Achyuta manages the cow protection programme at Bhaktivedanta Manor. Here, cows live peacefully, and treated as members of the community.

One of the highlights of our day was giving the cows a good scrub! It may have started as a practical task, but it quickly became a joyful, grounding experience. The sense of connection—to the animals, the land, and each other—was tangible.

The day reminded us that faith and sustainability are deeply intertwined. Bhaktivedanta Manor offers a powerful example of how compassion and environmental care can go hand in hand, rooted in spiritual values and lived practice.
